Clark must stop a kryptonite-infected man (Reynaldo Rosales) who seeks to relieve the suffering of the elderly and sick by turning them into ashes.
Who's Tyler? Tyler Randall's mom is ill and suffering. She wants Tyler
to help her die. With remorse and mercy, he suffocates her with a pillow. The
hospital nurses call security. While pursued, Tyler falls 20 feet to his death.
During the autopsy, the examining doctor finds a kryptonite stone from his bracelet
embedded in Tyler's wrist. The doc removes it. Suddenly Tyler awakens, grabbing
the doctor. Tyler's touch turns the doc to dust.
What's up with Clark? Clark and Martha meet Tyler; a new delivery volunteer
at the Mobile Meals food bank for house bound senior citizens. The three visit
ailing Mrs. Sikes' home to deliver food. Later at home, Clark tells Martha he's
not anxious to go with his dad on their annual fishing trip. When he meets up
with Lex at the Talon, Lex offers tickets to the Metropolis Sharks football
game for a father-son outing.
What's up with Lex? Lionel Luthor has ordered an investigation of Lex's
corporate finances. The accounting investigator questions Mr. Kent on why Lex
would order an in-depth profile/investigation of the Kent family after Lex's
crash. Later, Lex visits Jonathan, to ask about the football tickets. Lex shares
that he is envious of the Kent family relationships. Lex vows that the investigation
is closed and over.
What's up with Mrs. Sikes? Taking pity on her suffering, Tyler promises
to visit Mrs. Sikes and bring her a white rose. When he visits at night, her
noisy little dog Pepper greets him. Tyler takes Mrs. Sikes' hand and turns her
to ash.
What's up with Chloe? Suspicious of Mrs. Sikes' death, Chloe researches
death by spontaneous human combustion. She finds out about the doctor's ashen
remains, prompting her and Clark to investigate Mrs. Sikes' house. They discover
Pepper's ashes and the white rose in a bedside vase. Clark realizes Tyler's
involvement. Chloe gets the toxicology report on Tyler's autopsy and the meteor
rock found with him. She also learns that Tyler's mom did not suffocate, but
is alive and recovering.
What's up with Martha? She witnesses Tyler's "touch of death" and realizes
his connection to Mrs. Sikes' death. Tyler touches the Mobile Meals director
Hank Pond, turning him to dust. As Tyler approaches Martha, Clark comes to the
rescue. Although touched by Tyler for a moment, the decay on Clark's face disappears.
Tyler runs off.
What's up with Jonathan? Always protective of Clark's secret, Jonathan
is upset when he learns that Clark knew of Lex's past investigation but didn't
tell him. Clark feels he's being treated like a child and blurts out that he
doesn't like the fishing trips anymore and only goes to please his dad. Hurt
and stubborn, Jonathan avoids Clark. Martha encourages Clark to work it out,
so he'll have no regrets like Jonathan has over the relationship with his own
father.
What's up with Lana? Whitney's dad has had another heart attack. Clark
accompanies her to the hospital to see Mr. Fordham. Whitney's dad asks why Whitney
hasn't visited him in the hospital.
What's up with Whitney? Clark talks to Whitney about his dad. Whitney
hasn't because he's reluctant to see his dad ill and weak, preferring to remember
him as the strong healthy man he was. Whitney meets Lana at the cemetery over
her parent's grave. After sharing his feelings, Whitney leaves Lana alone and
heads to the hospital to visit his dad.
How it ends: Tyler meets Lana alone at the cemetery. Already warned by
Clark, she's frightened by him. Tyler had overheard Lana and Whitney's conversation
about his father, and tells Lana he can help. At the hospital, Whitney visits
his father's room. Tyler arrives wearing gloves, pushes Whitney aside, knocking
him unconscious. Tyler removes his gloves and approaches Mr. Fordham. Clark
arrives in time to stop Tyler. Clark tells Tyler his mother is alive, and takes
him to her hospital room. Tyler's relieved to see her. He admits to Clark that
he thought he was brought back to relieve the suffering of others. Realizing
what he's done; Tyler clasps his own hands together and turns to dust.
Later, with Mr. and Mrs. Fordham watching from the sidelines, Lex arranges a
scrimmage for Whitney with the Metropolis Sharks to fulfill Mr. Fordham's dream
for his son. Easy to arrange when your father owns the football team and Clark
makes the suggestion. Lex collects a rare compliment from Jonathan on arranging
the evening. Clark collects a kiss on the cheek from Lana for suggesting the
idea to Lex for the Fordhams. Jonathan and Clark patch things up when Jonathan
tells Clark the fishing trips were all about spending father-son time. He wanted
them to enjoy their relationship, something Jonathan didn't have with his own
dad. Father and son go off joking about how to catch more fish this year

Tyler takes a fall out a hospital window during a struggle while trying to kill his suffering mother at her request. He apparently dies, but a kryptonite wrist band imbeds itself in his wrist and resurrects him, with a touch that turns people to ash. Tyler comes to Smallville and begins his euthanasia spree, but is spotted by Martha. Clark, who is immune to his power, intervenes and Tyler escapes. On the lam, Tyler targets Whitney's father, who is in the hospital with another heart attack. Clark reveals that Tyler's mother is alive, and Tyler uses his powers on himself when he realizes he based everything he's done on a mistake. Meanwhile, Lionel Luthor sends one of his lackeys, Dominic, to check on Lex, and the guy finds out about Lex's investigations into the Kent family. Jonathan isn't happy when he finds out, and Lex eventually drugs Dominic and returns him to his father, postage due.

Lex: In his own way he's just trying to give you something my father never gave me.
Clark: What's that?
Lex: Limitations. All my father ever told me was "don't get caught" and "don't cause a scandal". That's not love, it's public relations. You have no idea how lucky you are. When my father dies, kings will come to his funeral but when yours does, his friends will come.
Clark: You know this is a crime scene.
Chloe: So?
Jonathan: He's a good kid, Lex, I don't want that to change.
Lex: Neither do I. [pause] You know, from the day I first met Clark, all you've ever seen is the name "Luthor".
Jonathan: Well so far you haven't given me a reason to see anything else.
Lex: No, I just want you to understand that if I'm guilty of anything regarding your family, it's envy.
Clark: You don't have to look so happy about it.
Chloe: I'm not happy. I'm intrigued.
Pete: Which means you're still going to look into it.
Chloe: Am I that transparent?
Pete and Clark: Yes.
Lex: You want to ask an accounting question, dad? Call me. And the next time one of your drones bothers the Kents, he'll be lucky to ride home with the spare.
Lionel: Lex...well done.
Lex: It bothers you, doesn't it. That I'm not dependent on you anymore. I've made friends in Smallville, people I can trust.
Lionel: Don't be ridiculous, Lex, I'm happy that you're doing well.
Lex: No you're not. You're afraid I won't need you anymore.
Mr. Luthor: You'll always be my son. And you will always need me, Lex.
Tyler: It's a miracle.
Clark: It's life. As long as we have that, there's still hope.
Lex: You know in ancient Persia, the kings would kill a messenger who brought them news they didn't like. In modern times a sword in the chest might seem a little extreme. Something more subtle would be in order. Enjoying your drink?
Lex: Let's be frank, Dominic. My father sent you here to spy on me because he's afraid of how well I'm doing. This was my last chance to prove myself and he just assumed I'd fail. Now he has to revise his definition of me. I'm not just his screw-up son anymore. Now I'm competition. And my father only knows one way of dealing with competition.
Martha: I'm not going to play referee, you two need to work this out.
Clark: We will. First we'll have a week of uncomfortable silence and then we'll start talking about something trivial. And then we'll move on.
Lex: Do you know what my father gave me for my tenth birthday? A copy of The Will to Power. "Behold the Superman - man is something to be overcome." Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Nietzsche, they were the voices that nurtured me after my mother died. My father made every question a quiz, every choice a test. Second best was for losers, compassion for the weak, trust no one. Those were the lessons I grew up with.
Dominic: I'll remember that if I'm ever interviewed by the Biography Channel.
Lex: All I'm saying, Dominic, is try to remember who I was raised by. I try to deny it, but I'm still my father's son. Tread carefully.
Clark: Besides, I know how we can catch more fish this year.
Jonathan: More lures?
Clark: X-ray vision.

Tyler Randall visits his mother in hospital. He is wearing a bracelet with a piece of meteor rock. She asks him to help her die. At first, he refuses, but finally agrees, and takes a pillow and begins suffocating her. A nurse walks in on him, and security stops him. They fight, and Tyler falls out of the window and dies.
At the morgue, the coroner begins the autopsy. He sees the bracelet on Tyler's wrist, and sees that, because of the fall, the rock has embedded itself into Tyler's skin. The coroner removes the bracelet and the rock. He goes to begin the autopsy, but Tyler wakes up, and grabs the coroner's arm. The coroner's whole body immediately turns to ash and crumbles.
Martha and Clark Kent are delivering flowers and vegetables to the retirement home. They meet Tyler, who is now working as a volunteer. They visit an old lady, who immediately is taken by Tyler. She tells him she likes white roses, and he promises to bring her one the following day. Clark notices that Tyler is wearing gloves while caring for the patients (direct contact would turn them to ash).
Lana Lang is worried for Whitney Fordman because his father just had another heart attack, and Whitney is too upset to visit his father in the hospital. Tyler returns to the old lady that evening, and offers her a white rose. He then tells her he can help her stop the pain, and she agrees. He touches her and she turns to ash. The following day, Chloe Sullivan reads the article and sees that the official story is that there was a fire, but neither she nor Clark believe it. Later, she finds an article on the coroner's death, and relate both deaths. They visit the old lady's room, and Clark finds the white rose and Clark begins suspecting Tyler.
The following day, Tyler goes to help Martha with her vegetable delivery, but forgets to wear his gloves. Her basket turns to ash. She is terrified, and calls for help. Hank, who works at the home comes to help her and fights with Tyler. Hank gets turned to ash. As Tyler reaches for Martha, Clark saves her, but Tyler runs away.
Lana and Whitney go visit Lana's parents' graves, and Whitney apologizes for his visiting the graves for the first time. He explains to Lana how painful it is to watch his father suffer. She understands and encourages him to go to the hospital. She spends a little more time at her parents' graves, and bumps into Tyler, who heard Whitney's problem. Tyler explains to Lana that he wants to help Whitney's father. Lana gets worried and runs to meet Clark and Chloe. Chloe has just found out that Tyler's mother actually survived, her health improved and she is back home in Smallville. After hearing Lana's story, Clark runs to the hospital.
Tyler finds Whitney in his father's room, and encourages Whitney to let him help his father. Whitney refuses, and Tyler knocks him out. He then removes his gloves, and is about to turn Mr. Fordman to ash, when Clark walks in and confronts him. He tells Tyler that his mother is still alive and resting, and then go and visit her. Tyler begins to feel guilty for the people he killed, explaining that he thought he was brought back to life to relieve the suffering of others, but it was his pain all along. He can't take the pain, joins his hands together, and turns himself to ash and crumbles.
